The Smooth Fox Terrier was originally used in fox hunts to "go to ground" and assist in finishing the hunt. They were carried on horseback by the rider until the Foxhounds cornered the game, and then released. To properly perform such task, the Fox Terrier was bred to be no larger than 15 1/2" at the shoulder.

The painting on top right, by famous artist John Emms, pictures the moment when the Fox Terrier was let free to do his job.

The painting on the left, by renowned artist Arthur Wardle, shows Fox Terriers following the game into a den in the ground.

Proper size is a feature of breed type that we work carefully to preserve in our Smooths.
